    Intent

At Coombe Hill Infant School, our aim is to develop enthusiastic, engaged learners, motivated to be active and to experience success and enjoyment through physical activity.  We aim to nurture all the fundamental movement skills (e.g. running, jumping, throwing, catching, balance, agility and coordination) along with the ability to confidently apply these movements in a range of activities. From Early Years to the end of KS1, every child builds physical competence, teamwork skills,  self-belief and healthy habits to thrive.

    Implementation

Our enriched PE curriculum provides a progressive and inclusive approach to physical development learning, enabling all pupils to flourish. We follow GetSet4PE, which aligns with the National Curriculum and EYFS Framework and provides a progressive learning journey from Reception to Year 2.  Pupils systematically build fundamental movement skills, their confidence, and teamwork skills through carefully planned lessons which promote challenge and a love of being active.

Pupils have the opportunity to develop skills in dance, fitness, gymnastics, team games, swimming, target games and more!  Consistency, high quality teaching, a clear progression of skills, knowledge and key vocabulary is prioritised by all teaching staff from our Reception team to Year 2.

Teaching and learning happens indoors and outdoors, and lessons are easily adapted for all learners.  Our PE lessons are taught in our large infant hall with specialist gym equipment and outside in our MUGA (multi-use games area) or our unique school swimming pool.

Teaching and learning is enriched across all phases by our professional sports’ coaching, Love The Ball, who specifically focus on developing ball skills and knowledge in football, cricket, basketball and tag rugby.  Excitingly, as soon as the weather permits, we are very fortunate to be able to offer all pupils weekly beginner swimming and water skills lessons at our outdoor swimming pool nestled within our wonderful grounds!

Physical activity is celebrated and promoted as part of daily school life, to motivate all pupils to become active and to promote the importance of physical wellbeing.  Our Daily Mile is a great way to boost focus and allow pupils a purposeful movement break.  It is a wonderful sight to see our pupils flood onto the Adventure Playground with such enthusiasm for this daily movement activity.

We ensure pupils have the opportunity to compete, holding in-school competitions for dance and gymnastics as well as participating in inter-school events e.g. football, swimming and country dancing.

Our end of year Sports Day is a unique opportunity to celebrate all of the skills learned across the year and is always a highlight in our school calendar, well attended by all of our parents and extended family.

    Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is to provide positive childhood experiences of being physically active as part of everyday life.  We offer an enriched PE curriculum to ensure every child can enjoy sport and build self-confidence across a range of activities.

PE is naturally social and the interactions pupils have in a sporting context allows for the development of oracy skills though communication and team playing.  Additionally, in competing, pupils develop collaboration, respect and resilience.

Combining indoor and outdoor PE allows pupils to experience different movement games and skills and many opportunities to find the activities they love.

Ultimately, our enriched PE progression journey allows for every child to develop a love of being active and staying healthy.
