RE

Intent

At Coombe Hill Infant School, we value and celebrate the richness of our community. Therefore, through the teaching of Religious Education (RE) we seek to promote and encourage respect from all people of different religions. Our RE curriculum will ensure that children will learn about religions and world views, including beliefs, practices and traditions. We provide learning opportunities to encourage curiosity, develop understanding and instill the concept of acceptance. By being sensitive to the fact that all children have their own backgrounds and individual relationship with RE, we will ensure that the subject is accessible to all. As a result, RE will help children to reflect on the kind of person they want to be as a member of Coombe Hill Infants but also as citizens of the world.

Implementation

At Coombe Hill Infant School, we follow the Kingston Upon Thames agreed syllabus.  RE is taught in discrete blocks with both Reception and KS1 learning about three main religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam.  The syllabus incorporates the “Understanding Christianity approach”. It makes a significant contribution to children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development as well as providing important opportunities for exploring British Values.

Impact

RE encourages sensitivity and respect. It promotes acceptance and understanding and enhances a pupil's own spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Children are able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world, enabling them to develop an understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life, which they are then able to communicate to the wider community.
